Transnet Freight Rail (TFR), a division of Transnet SOC Ltd, is a leading entity in South Africa’s rail and logistics sector. TFR plays a crucial role in facilitating the efficient transportation of goods across the country, ensuring reliable services and seamless rail operations. TFR is looking for dedicated individuals to join its Track Engineering Works team on a fixed-term contract for the period from 01 April 2025 to 25 March 2026. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to maintaining and developing the country’s rail infrastructure in a hands-on, physically engaging environment.

Job Summary:

Transnet Freight Rail is seeking a skilled X60 General Worker to assist the RNC Construction teams in performing essential maintenance and construction work on rail infrastructure. This position requires physical labor, technical aptitude, and a strong ability to follow instructions. Successful candidates will play a key role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of rail operations by assisting in various track engineering tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handling & Material Management:
    • Assist with the loading, offloading, and handling of materials for track engineering work.
    • Identify, distinguish, and correctly use the necessary tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Construction Support:
    • Perform trench excavations and manage services to trenches, including backfilling.
    • Use non-mechanized hand tools as required in construction tasks.
  • Site Maintenance:
    • Clean the construction site by removing weeds, stacking materials, sweeping floors, and disposing of rubble and excess materials.
  • Team Support:
    • Follow supervisor instructions and contribute to daily task execution, including the understanding of task sequencing.

Qualifications & Experience Required:

  • Minimum Experience: At least 6 months of relevant experience in a construction environment.
  • Minimum Education: Grade 9 (or equivalent).
  • Knowledge Required:
    • Understanding of the construction working environment.
    • Knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials used in construction.
    • Ability to distinguish between different tools, equipment, and materials and understand their appropriate use.
  • Physical & Medical Requirements:
    • Candidates must be physically and medically fit for the role.
